The 25 Most Compelling Viral Videos
(With Black People In Them) Part 1
Wednesday, September 2, 2009
Through VeTalle Fusilier’s “Whose Tube?” column, we’ve been following the use of web video by African Americans and whether that usage has shown a desire to build power, inform or show evidence that people are using this new tool for cultural progression, economic and political empowerment or simply a form of self-published entertainment.
After two years of those columns, we’d have to say the general consensus is: ALL OF THE ABOVE.
While Vetalle works on his next column, we thought we’d poll our folks on Twitter, Facebook and around the office on which viral videos featuring Blacks made some significant impression on them. The only rules were that no major label music videos, major studio movie trailers or professional marketing videos by corporations were allowed. Oh, and no sex tapes.
This is what we came up with. You may disagree, or add your own.
For Part I, Numbers 15-25.
#25. Whazzup Super Friends
EDITOR’S NOTE: Many people got introduced to YouTube with this video. Is it still funny? How many people still remember the Super Friends or the whassup commercials?
24. The Weatherman and the Cockroach
EDITOR’ S NOTE: Now ask yourself, are you laughing because there’s a roach, or are you laughing at the weatherman? Why?
