Michelle Robinson knew the tall skinny guy she married had potential, but did she think things would go this far, so soon? Supportive and protective of her husband, she did what any woman would do for love – hit the campaign trail and hit it hard to let America know what she knew about the Democratic presidential candidate. But, in the process of helping America get to know Barack, they got to know her as well. Regal, accomplished and able to command an audience, the spectre of her as First Lady has always been an easy image to conjure.

When good things happen for a friend, you wish them nothing but the best. Well, I don’t know the lady personally, but things are about to get crazy – really crazy, and there are a few things I’d like for her to keep in mind. So here is my Top 10 List of wishes for Michelle Obama, the next First Lady of the United States:

10. I hope you keep your stash of yoga pants and baseball hats. It’s a good look and reminds the rest of us that everyone needs down time.

9. I hope you continue to see your girls’ growing up in the White House as “a gift.” That perspective will be invaluable to them as they adjust to a very public life.

8. I hope you assemble an international group of girlfriends – first ladies and women operating on a global scale – so that you can add your considerable skills to arriving at world-class solutions.

7. I hope you trust in and enrich the style you bring with you to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. There has never been another like it.

6. I hope your support staff  become fierce guardians of your family’s privacy.

5. I hope you are on hand to witness your mother’s wonder at her new life. How remarkable to start anew at a time when adventure doesn’t come as frequently as it once did.

4. I hope you are able to steal a few moments each day to connect with the President.

3. I hope you are able to make tremendous strides on the issues most important to you.

2. I hope you are able to further advance the notion of America as a gumbo with distinctly different ingredients and the potential for decidedly satisfying results.

1. I hope you bring to bear every nuance, every idea, every experience, every ancestor that has ever crossed your path, so that, as is your destiny, you bring your A-game and turn that mother out.
